La Dynamica interview met Fabian Nodarse

Read as well an interview with SalsaNet.nl

What kind of music do you listen to?
First of all I listen to all Cuban music, from traditional styles to timba. I also like salsa from New York and Puerto Rico. I’m passionate about romantic music in general but of course I also listen to pop music. I like classic rock like for example the Mexican band “Mana” and I listen to Queen. I also like classic music but I only listen to it when I’m in the mood. I’m an admirer of Huey Dunbar and my favourite musical role model is Sergio George who to me is a master in his field and I will not loose hope of meeting him in person one day.
What means Cuba to you as a musician?
First of all I’d like to say that I’m proud of being Cuban. To me it’s a privilege to have been born and raised in a country where music is such an important part of life.
To say Cuba is to say guaracha, rumba, bolero, timba y guaguanco. Cuba is the country of the great ‘soneros’ (son-singers). For me as a singer, growing up in Cuba has been very important to educate me as a musician. I take this with me for the rest of my life. I think there’s no Cuban musician that isn’t proud to have been born there.
I’ve understood that you are making your own CD at the moment. Does the CD have your compositions or does it also contain songs that are known already?
No, I’m the writer of all the songs that I sing. Composing is something that I love to do. In fact it’s one of the reasons for wanting to make my own CD.

What kind of music can we expect in this CD?

The music on this CD is what I call refreshing. It shows in the lyrics and in the way the arrangements are done. The CD contains a great variety and was influenced by different genres and modern rhythms.
like salsa-pop, balada, gypsy-gitano, salsa-timba, to cut it short, it’s a musical fusion.
Of course you can’t discuss taste and every one will have their own opinion. I love good music and I’m open to modern rhythms and new musical genres. I follow everything that comes out on the market and I believe the music on this CD is the result of all of that.
When you are composing a song, do you think of something that has happened to you?
That’s a good question. Many people that listen to my songs have asked me if it’s about something that happened to me. The answer is “no”. Life is full of situations and my themes have something to do with all of them. Maybe in some of my songs I can recognize things that have happened to me, but that’s pure coincidence.
There’s one exception; on this CD there’s a theme that was dedicated to one person only. The song’s called “Hechizo” and I wrote it for my wife Myriam.

You write a lot about love?

Often yes, I believe that without love life has no meaning. I’m a romantic and automatically this subject had to be part of my songs.

The song “No creo mas” talks about a deception of love. Does that say anything about the way you feel about the subject?

Look, it’s not always like that. We all have good and bad experiences when it comes to love. When you are feeling good and you are sharing your life with the person of your dreams, you want to listen to songs that describe what you are living at that moment.
But not all in life is “happy ever after”. There are people that have bitter memories about their love life and it’s those people I think of as well when I’m writing a song like “No creo mas”. These kind of songs can help people express themselves emotionally.
Can you tell us about the musicians that have worked with you on this CD?
The piano, keyboard, drum programming and one of the voices in the coros was Marc Bischoff from Germany. It was a great experience for me to work with him. I trusted blindly in his work as a producer and I’m very happy with the result.
On the electric bas plays Leslie Lopez from Puerto Rico, a fantastic musician that played his part with taste and feeling.
Lucio Garcia from Cuba plays the electric guitar. He gave a tremendous interpretation on his instrument; he did good work on the songs he recorded.
Nils Fischer played the congas, bongo, guiro, campana, clave, cajon and even some Arabic instruments. The feeling he puts into the music is incredible.
Armando Vidal from Cuba plays timbal, drums and bongos and sings in the coros. His tribute as a musician was fantastic, but not only that: his rap is challenging to all rappers. You can hear it on the song “Baila mi musica”.
Liber Torriente from Cuba is another brilliant percussionist that was part of this project. He did a timbal solo on the track “Te anduve buscando”. I remember that it was only the second take he did that we used on the CD. Great, his swing and style.
Rafael Espinal from the Dominican Republic has played the maracas with great feeling.
On the trumpet we had Joe Riviera and on the trombone David Rothschild; both from New York. They’ve done an incredible amount of work in just two days of recoding. What they put into their music you can’t buy anywhere. The result is special.
The violins were played by Jussi Jaatinen and Maija Jaatinen and the cello by Jani Metso; all students at the conservatorium in Holland. They’ve done a good and professional job on the songs “Dile”, “Vida mia” (balada), “Donde nadie me ve” and “Piensa en ti”.
“Esta vez me siento complacido”. That’s the way the song “Vida mia” starts. And that’s the way I feel about having done this duo with Pauliina May. I remember that she almost didn’t make it, because she wasn’t in Holland at the time of the recordings. But in the end everything turned out fine and I’m very happy with the result. This song means a lot to me personally and Pauliina has given it the touch that I needed. Thanks Pauliina.
The coros were done by Marc Bischoff, Pauliina May, Elisabet Almaguer (Lisi), Yazmin Saavedra, Armando Vidal and myself.
We recorded at the Edgetip studio in Arnhem, Holland; technical engineer was Raoul Soentken. We worked together as a good team.
Are you satisfied with the results that you’ve achieved with the recording of your first solo-CD?
I’m very happy with it all; not only with what I’ve done myself, but I owe a lot to all the musicians that I’ve mentioned. Every one of them deserves my respect and admiration. I would like to thank them again from the bottom of my heart.
I cant stop saying either that Marc Bischoff’s tribute was fantastic. His dedication to this project was endless and I owe him a great deal of what was achieved (on this recording). Without his talent and musical knowledge I couldn’t have worked out my ideas. He arranged my music the way I imagined it to be and that is truly special. It means you have to be on the same wave length when it comes to musical taste. “Un millon de gracias” Marc; to me you are talent amongst talents.
